Hamsters

Hamsters are omnivores with cheek pouches that can impact on sticky or sharp foods; their tiny body mass means even small toxic doses are significant.

Toxikologie-Profil

Extreme Body-Mass Sensitivity

At 25–130 g body weight, sub-gram quantities of toxic foods can deliver lethal concentrations. A single grape seed or citrus wedge contains enough sugar and acid to cause serious metabolic distress.

Cheek Pouch Retention

Sticky, acidic, or moist foods can become impacted inside cheek pouches, where they ferment and release toxins directly against the delicate mucosal lining, causing localized necrosis and systemic infection.

Diabetes Predisposition

Syrian and Russian hamsters are genetically prone to spontaneous diabetes mellitus. Sugary foods trigger rapid-onset hyperglycemia and can precipitate diabetic crisis even in young animals.
