Sunflower seeds are rich in fat and energy. In the wild a hamster would forage a varied diet, but in a cage it is easy to overfeed seeds because hamsters find them irresistible and will stuff them into their cheek pouches and hoard them.

The problem is not poison but balance. A hamster that fills up on fatty seeds will skip its formulated pellets, missing protein, vitamins and minerals, and can quickly become overweight. Salted or seasoned seeds add a further risk because hamsters handle very little sodium.
