Peppermint

Toxic Herbs

Peppermint is toxic to cats and should never be offered deliberately or left within a cat's reach. The plant contains phenolic compounds and essential oils — particularly menthol and pulegone — that cats cannot safely metabolize due to their deficiency in hepatic glucuronidation enzymes. Even small exposures through ingestion, skin contact, or concentrated essential oil diffusion can trigger liver damage, neurological signs, and gastrointestinal distress.

Clinical note: Feline phenol toxicosis — hepatotoxic and neurotoxic; avoid all forms including essential oils and fresh herb.
