Kale

Caution Vegetables

Kale is not toxic to hamsters, but its high oxalate content, goitrogenic compounds, and calcium-to-phosphorus ratio make it a food to offer only sparingly and infrequently. A tiny leaf shred once or twice a week is unlikely to cause harm, but daily feeding can contribute to bladder sludge, thyroid disruption, and digestive upset in these small animals. Owners who want to add leafy greens to a hamster's diet should view kale as an occasional treat rather than a dietary staple.

Clinical note: Goitrogenic vegetable — appropriate only as a rare, small-portion treat; contraindicated in hamsters with known urinary or thyroid concerns.
